What Does a Hidden Dog Fence Cost in Michigan?
There is no one-size-fits-all price for a hidden fence in Michigan because every property and every dog is different.
While upfront cost is important, understanding the long-term ownership cost of a system - such as reliability, maintenance, and training success - is just as critical. Professional systems are designed around your yard layout, and your dog's behavior, focusing on safe, consistent containment over time rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. For most homes with one dog and a yard up to about three-quarters of an acre, a professionally installed system typically falls somewhere in the $2,000 to $3,000 range. It’s worth noting that most of our systems include a six year supply of batteries for each pet(s) receiver collar, our unlimited fence training, and our 100% money back containment guarantee.
Getting an accurate price usually takes a few minutes and starts with a simple conversation about your property and your dog.
The cost depends on real factors such as property size, layout, terrain, and how the system needs to be designed for your dog.
DogWatch offers multiple professional-grade systems designed to handle a wide range of properties and dogs. DogWatch offers solutions for nearly every property and dog, but selecting the correct system — and designing it properly — is what determines how well it performs.
At DogWatch by K9 Keeper Fencing, our job is to educate you before you make a decision. We take the time to explain how invisible dog fences actually work, what separates professional systems from budget alternatives, how DogWatch outperforms other professional options, and which DogWatch system makes the most sense for your specific situation.
Pricing is influenced by factors such as yard size, terrain, layout complexity, the specific DogWatch system used, the number of pets, and whether indoor boundaries or other exclusion zones are part of the design. A properly designed system is custom-built for your property — not forced into a one-size-fits-all package.
We don’t believe in high-pressure sales or misleading “starting prices.” Instead, we focus on helping you understand your options so you can make the right decision for your dog, your yard, and your long-term peace of mind.
That combination of system selection, professional installation, and long-term support is what separates us from everyone else.Let us show you why DogWatch® is the most reliable hidden fence system available, and also one of the most cost-effective over time.
Getting an accurate price usually takes just a few minutes and starts with a simple conversation. We’ll explain the differences, answer your questions, and provide a clear, honest estimate — no obligation. We’re also happy to help you compare any other systems you’re considering with our DogWatch solutions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will this work for my dog?
The longer answer: Dogs quickly learn to recognize and respect the boundary when the system is installed properly and the training is done correctly. We often say that training always beats restraining.
In fact, over the years we have successfully trained more than 12,000 dogs, and have issued only one refund for non-containment. When the system is installed properly and the training is done correctly, reliable containment is not only achievable — it is expected.
Most of our packages not only include unlimited fence training, but also a 100% money-back containment guarantee — meaning that in the extremely rare event we are unable to successfully contain your dog, you are fully protected.
Another advantage of the DogWatch system is that most DogWatch hidden fences are compatible with each other. This means that if your dog visits a friend or family member who also has a DogWatch system, the same collar can often work there as well. In many cases, you could bring your dog and collar to another DogWatch yard and the system would function just as it does at home.
Is my yard too large or too small for a hidden dog fence?
The longer answer: While the majority of our customers have properties in the 1/3- to 2-acre range, we routinely install hidden fences everywhere from tight lakefront lots with barely enough room to walk around the house to 200-acre orchards — and everything in between.
Some of our DogWatch systems utilize an adjustable signal buffer that triggers the collar 3 to 10 feet away from the wire. On larger properties this is often desirable, creating a comfortable safety margin between the boundary and the edge of the property. On smaller properties, where space is tight, giving up that much usable yard space simply is not practical.
That’s where our ProFence X system comes in. The ProFence X features a zero-distance buffer, allowing the boundary to be placed exactly where the wire is installed. This makes it ideal for maximizing usable space on compact properties while still being fully capable of securing large, sprawling acreages.
The ProFence X also exclusively features Welcome Home technology. If a confused dog ever breaches the boundary during an emergency, the system allows the dog to safely re-enter the yard without receiving a correction.
Regardless of the property size or the system you choose, every K9 Keeper installation utilizes an exclusive FM digital signal, ensuring reliable operation even if a neighbor also has a hidden fence nearby.
Most of our packages include unlimited fence training and our money-back containment guarantee.
K9 Keeper offers four different DogWatch systems, ranging from basic containment to advanced systems including SmartFence, allowing us to design a hidden fence solution that perfectly fits your property, your dog, and your budget.
How deep is the hidden fence wire buried?
The longer answer: Wire depth and wire quality both play a major role in the long-term reliability of your hidden fence system. That’s why we install a heavy-duty 14-gauge solid copper wire protected by a tough UV-resistant direct-burial jacket.
We bury our line deep enough that we actually guarantee it against normal lawn care — meaning you can safely aerate your lawn and edge your driveway without risking damage to the system. Installing the wire much shallower than about 4 inches would leave it vulnerable to normal lawn care equipment, while burying it significantly deeper provides no real advantage. Other companies don’t make this guarantee, while some even go out of their way to specifically state that aeration and edging damage is not covered.
We use 14-gauge solid copper wire — not the cheaper copper-coated steel used in many lower-cost systems. By comparison, most professional installers use 16- or 18-gauge wire, while DIY kits typically rely on very thin 20-gauge wire.
Our standard is simple:
Nobody installs better dog fences. Nobody installs dog fences better.

Can you repair hidden fences installed by other companies?
The longer answer: Over the years we have repaired and serviced hundreds of hidden dog fence systems originally installed by other companies. In many cases the issue is something simple such as a wire break, a lightning strike, or aging equipment.
Because hidden fence systems all operate on the same basic principles, we are usually able to locate the problem and restore the boundary wire quickly. Not only can we repair existing systems, we can also modify the boundary layout — for example if you want to expand your dog's play area, protect a garden, or adjust the layout after new landscaping.
However, we generally cannot repair collars or transmitters from other brands. In those situations we typically replace the electronics with newer DogWatch equipment while keeping the existing boundary wire whenever possible.
We also offer trade-in opportunities for homeowners who have older or unreliable systems and want to upgrade to a modern DogWatch system. Our goal is simple — to get your system working reliably again and keep your dog safely contained.
How long can I expect one of these systems to last?
The longer answer: DogWatch hidden fence systems are very simple by design. The underground boundary wire can remain in service for decades when it is installed correctly and repaired properly when needed.
Occasional wire breaks can happen due to lightning strikes, digging, or other outside damage. When those repairs are done correctly, the boundary can continue functioning for many more years. In practice, this means the lifespan of the wire itself is virtually indefinite.
The main components of the DogWatch system are protected by the DogWatch® Lifetime Limited Warranty, which covers manufacturing defects as well as things like dog chew damage to the receiver and lightning strikes to the transmitter. In fact, some of our customers are still running original DogWatch equipment purchased in the 1990s.
Another reason these systems last so long is that DogWatch receiver collars use simple replaceable batteries. Unlike some systems that rely on sealed rechargeable batteries that eventually fail, DogWatch collars can continue operating reliably for many years with routine battery replacement.
If you move, you can even bring the main components with you and simply install new boundary wire at your new home, allowing you to continue using the same system for many years.
How much does a hidden dog fence cost?
The longer answer: The exact price of a hidden dog fence depends on several factors, including the size of the property, the number of pets, which DogWatch system you choose, and whether you want additional features such as Indoor & Outdoor Avoidance Systems to protect things like gardens, pools, landscaping, or rooms inside the home.
We offer four different DogWatch system packages, ranging from basic containment systems to fully featured options such as our SmartFence system. For most homes with one dog and a yard up to about three-quarters of an acre, these professionally installed systems typically fall somewhere in the $2,000 to $3,000 range.
Larger properties, additional pets, premium system features, or additional avoidance zones can increase the price, while smaller properties may fall toward the lower end of that range.
It’s also worth noting that most of our systems include the first six years of batteries for the receiver collar.
With some companies, replacement batteries can cost $100 or more per year per dog — which can add up to well over $1,000 in battery costs over the lifetime of a typical dog.
In contrast, most of our systems include the first six years of batteries, and replacing them through year ten typically costs only about $50 out of pocket.
DogWatch® systems do not require monthly or yearly service contracts. DogWatch receiver collars also use standard, non-proprietary batteries that are easy to find and inexpensive to replace, so you’re never locked into buying special batteries or paying ongoing fees just to keep your system running.
Just as importantly, replaceable batteries mean the collar itself can remain in service for many years rather than being discarded when a sealed battery fails — which is better for your dog, your wallet, and the environment.
A professionally installed DogWatch® hidden fence is also a long-term investment in your dog’s safety and freedom. Many of our customers use the same DogWatch system for decades, and if you move, the main components can often be brought with you and installed at your next home.
