Outdoor Invisible Dog Fence FAQs
Does an invisible dog fence work for large or stubborn dogs?
Yes. Modern invisible dog fence systems, especially professionally installed DogWatch® systems, are effective for dogs of all sizes and temperaments when paired with proper training. Professional systems have a significantly higher success rate than DIY options because boundaries, signal strength, and training are customized to the dog and property. Many DogWatch systems also include features like AutoMemory™ and TattleTale®, which automatically reinforce training by adjusting correction levels and alerting owners when a dog is testing the boundary. Most of our package is also include unlimited training and a money–back containment guarantee, so families can move forward with confidence – even if their dog is more determined than most; we even have customers with horses on DogWatch systems.
How deep is the invisible fence wire buried?
Great question! Wire depth and installation method play a major role in long-term reliability and dog safety. It’s common for homeowners to hear stories about frequent wire breaks, often tied to DIY systems that include very thin, fragile wire and are typically buried only an inch or two below the surface. That shallow installation leaves the wire vulnerable to lawn aeration, driveway edging, seasonal ground movement, and routine yard work.
We take a very different approach. Our systems are installed using specialized trenching methods, and we guarantee the wire is buried deep enough to allow for normal lawn care, including mowing, aeration, and driveway edging, without damaging the system. Our installations are intentionally planned so homeowners can maintain their property with confidence — something most companies and competitors do not specifically guarantee.
Just as important as the installation is the wire itself. We use a heavy-duty 14-gauge solid copper wire — not cheaper copper-plated steel — protected by a tough, direct-burial-rated, UV-resistant jacket. This construction is significantly more durable than the thin 20-gauge wire commonly included with DIY systems, and even heavier-duty than the 16-gauge or thinner wire used by many other professional companies. The result is fewer wire breaks, more consistent signal performance, and a system designed to reliably keep dogs safe for decades. No one installs better wire than K9 Keeper.
Can you repair or service invisible fences installed by other companies?
Yes. We repair and service most invisible dog fence systems, even if they were installed by another company. Whether you’re along the Lakeshore in Holland, Grand Haven, or Muskegon, or dealing with an older system anywhere in West or Central Michigan, we can help restore reliable containment. This includes locating and repairing wire breaks, moving or modifying existing boundary wire, and diagnosing transmitter and collar-related issues.
Because some brands are retail-only systems rather than professionally installed solutions, there are situations where a manufacturer-specific component may need to be replaced rather than repaired. When that happens, we’ll clearly explain what’s going on and outline your options. In many cases, we’re still able to restore reliable containment — and homeowners in communities like Rockford, Byron Center, and Battle Creek often call us when aging systems need expert troubleshooting or upgrades. If an upgrade makes more sense, we’ll help you take advantage of our trade-in options to move to a modern DogWatch system designed for long-term reliability and dog safety.
Will an invisible fence work on my property?
It depends — on the property and the type of system being used. For example, most standard invisible fences trigger the collar several feet away from the buried boundary wire. In most cases this is perfectly fine — and even desirable — because the warning and correction distance is adjustable and provides a clear buffer for dogs. But this type of system might also prevent a dog from going around the house on a very narrow property.
However, smaller properties or more specific layouts may require a more advanced approach. Systems like DogWatch’s ProFenceX are designed with a zero-buffer boundary, meaning the collar only activates if the dog goes beyond the buried wire itself. This allows dogs to use virtually all of the available yard space, which can be especially important near driveways, sidewalks, or tighter property lines. These systems also allow for a correction-free return if an unlikely escape happens.
That’s why professional design matters. A very tight waterfront lot calls for a different solution than a wide-open three-acre lawn. By evaluating the layout of your property, how your dog behaves, and how the space is actually used, the right system can be selected to create reliable containment and establish gentle, effective boundaries exactly where you want them — without unnecessary correction.
Can invisible fences be used indoors?
It depends on the system. While many invisible fence brands are designed only for outdoor containment, DogWatch® systems also support indoor boundaries as part of an integrated setup. We refer to these as Mobile Boundaries, which allow you to define off-limits areas without physically restricting your dog.
Mobile Boundaries are commonly used indoors to keep dogs away from trash cans, furniture, stairways, or certain rooms. We also offer a weatherproof Mobile Boundary that can be used outdoors to protect areas such as flower beds, gardens, or other off-limits spaces within the yard. When paired with proper training, these boundaries help dogs understand expectations clearly and consistently.
Is an invisible dog fence safe for dogs?
Yes — when installed correctly and paired with proper training, DogWatch invisible fence systems are safe, humane, and designed around how dogs actually learn. Unlike physical restraints such as chains, tie-outs, or kennel runs, DogWatch systems focus on teaching clear boundaries rather than physically restricting movement.
DogWatch uses advanced adjustable correction technology designed to communicate, not punish. Features like AutoMemory™, TattleTale®, and FM Safelink® technology help ensure consistent, effective training while reducing false triggers caused by interference.
Most of our DogWatch systems also include unlimited training and a money-back containment guarantee, because dog safety is our number one priority. See what some of our customers have to say.
How much does an invisible dog fence cost?
You guessed it — it depends. Long-term reliability, ongoing maintenance, and replacement costs all play an important role in the true cost of ownership. Pricing varies based on factors such as the size and layout of your property, the type of system required, the number of dogs, and whether features like indoor boundaries, exclusion zones, or specialized layouts are needed.
DIY kits sold online or at big-box stores are sold as equipment only. They do not include installation, professional system design, or training support. These products also typically come with short warranties, limited features, no local parts or service support, and a higher risk of inconsistent performance.
Long-term cost is another important consideration. DogWatch systems are known for having the longest battery life in the industry, significantly reducing ongoing maintenance costs. Most of our DogWatch packages include a six-year battery supply for each pet, while many other companies include only the first year — resulting in more frequent replacements and added expense over time.
Getting pricing is easy. With just a quick consultation, we can review your property, answer questions, and provide clear pricing tailored to your dog and your needs.
What happens if I move?
You have options. Many homeowners choose to leave the system in place when selling their home, since a professionally installed dog containment system can be an added benefit for buyers with pets. Alternatively, many core components — such as collars and certain system equipment — can often be reused at a new location and incorporated into a newly designed system.
DogWatch systems can be designed to match the layout and scale of your next home, and the main components are backed by the DogWatch® Lifetime Limited Warranty, helping protect your investment long-term.
