Remote Dog Training Collar Frequently Asked Questions
What is a remote trainer?
Remote trainers allow you to communicate with your pet. With proper use, they help reinforce your commands and correct your dog’s unwanted behaviors. They provide the ability to train your dog with precise timing and consistency, both of which are important for effective training.
How does a remote trainer work?
There are two basic components to a remote training system: a handheld transmitter and a receiver worn on your dog’s collar. You use the transmitter to send a signal to the receiver.
Depending on the training situation, you can select:
- An audible tone or vibration
- A brief stimulation (1 second)
- A constant stimulation (up to 8 seconds)
The signal from the receiver collar can get your dog’s attention or distract him from an unwanted behavior. By obeying your command or stopping the unwanted behavior, your dog quickly learns how to avoid the tone or sensation delivered by the receiver.
What kind of safety features do BigLeash® Remote Trainers have?
In addition to multiple training levels as well as audible and vibration modes, BigLeash® can be set to level “0” so you do not accidentally send a signal when the collar is on your dog but you are not actively using the trainer. Certain models also include an automatic shut-off feature that limits continuous stimulation.
What age should my dog be before I can begin using a remote trainer?
The appropriate age depends on the dog and his readiness for training. Your dog should have a basic understanding of what is expected and understand basic commands. Many trainers recommend waiting until five or six months of age, though some younger dogs may be ready if they already understand basic commands.
How tight should the BigLeash® receiver be fastened, and how do I prevent irritation?
The receiver collar should be worn comfortably snug on your dog’s neck. If it appears your dog is not feeling the stimulation, try tightening the collar strap slightly. Be sure the collar is tight enough for the contact points to reach through the undercoat.
If your dog develops irritation, the collar may have been worn too long or may be too tight or too loose. Do not leave the collar on for more than eight hours a day, make sure it fits properly, and reposition it slightly along the neck to help prevent rubbing.
Where can I find the owner’s manual and warranty information?
Can my dog’s collar receiver be accidentally activated by a neighbor’s remote trainer?
No. DogWatch® remote trainers use a unique code programmed for each collar. The receiver collar must be paired to a specific transmitter in order to receive the signal.
Will the stimulation signal hurt my dog?
The stimulation from the collar is intended to distract your dog by delivering an unpleasant but harmless sensation similar to the static shock you feel after walking across carpet in your socks.
BigLeash® training collars provide multiple stimulation levels, and most trainers are able to achieve good results using low-intensity levels that are often barely perceptible to humans. BigLeash® models also include audible and vibration signals, which can help reduce or eliminate the need for stimulation altogether.
Which stimulation level is correct for my dog?
Always start with the lowest level and work your way up as needed. You have found the proper level when your dog responds with only a mild twitch, perk of the ears, or a reaction similar to a light tug on the leash.
What is the difference between “Brief” and “Continuous” stimulation?
Brief stimulation is a quick attention-getter that lasts only a fraction of a second, regardless of how long you press the button.
Continuous stimulation is a pulsating stimulation that continues until you release the transmitter button, up to a maximum of 8 seconds.
Can K9 Keeper assist me with training?
Yes. We can assist with training or recommend a local trainer if needed. Contact us for help.
What is the correct way to use a remote trainer?
Remote trainers are intended for two basic purposes:
- To assist with training and reinforcing desirable behaviors, such as obedience commands. Your dog learns to turn off the vibration or stimulation by performing the command correctly.
- To correct unwanted behaviors, such as digging, chewing, or jumping. Your dog learns to associate the vibration or stimulation with the unwanted behavior and stops doing it.
Remote trainers are not recommended for dogs with a history of aggressive behavior unless they are being used by experienced dog trainers.
Can I cut the excess collar strap off after I fit the collar to my dog?
Yes — once the collar is properly fitted, you can trim the excess strap.
How do I insert the charger into the receiver collar?
The charging port is located on the back of the receiver under the protective tab. Lift the tab to insert the charger, then replace the protective tab securely after charging. Do not remove the screw that secures the protective tab.
How long do rechargeable batteries last?
The duration of the battery charge depends on how the collar is used. If the collar is used intermittently and turned off when not in use, the charge will last longer than if corrections are made frequently or the collar is left on when not in use.
For best results, charge the collar when it is not being used—preferably every night. Frequent charging will not damage the battery or shorten its life.
